Chhattisgarh

Chhattisgarh is a centrally located state of India between Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Odisha. Set midst forests, its hilly terrain and river valleys preserve a treasure of over 2,200 years of heritage. In its northern hills are found one of the world's oldest known "love graffiti" inscription from a girl for a boy, along with Asia's oldest performance theatre and murals.

Chhattisgarh is rich in mines and minerals. It was home to the trade routes between north, east and south India. Its innovation in arts and architecture, particularly those related to Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism are remarkable. The state has the largest collection of historic stellate Hindu temple architecture.

Below is a list of notable historic sites of Chhattisgarh dated between 200 BCE and 16th century CE. Like elsewhere in India, Chhattisgarh temples and monasteries were built midst lush forests, waterfalls, lakes, along the banks of regional rivers, or near confluence of rivers. Reaching these sites is now ever more quicker and simpler, given the recently completed roads and highways infrastructure projects.
